I was born and raised in Minnesota by a loving family that had a passion for the outdoors.I actually can not remember when I started fishing, honestly, I started that young. My passion for hunting has fit in real nice with my passion for fishing and between them, well, they consume most of my time.
I graduated from North DakotaStateUniversity with a Bachelors Degree in Respiratory Therapy.I really wanted to work in a profession where I could help people. In addition to my Bachelors degree in Respiratory Therapy, I graduated with several minors in fishing guiding, bar tending, partying and having fun. Some of which I actually got paid for, most of which, I paid for.My summers in college were spent working as a fishing guide/bartender at a resort on Lake of the Woods, Minnesota which would prove to be as valuable as any formal education I received.
Upon Graduation, I moved to Des MoinesIowa where I took a job as a Respiratory Therapy.I quickly learned that the politics of health care sometimes interfere with doing what is “right” for people. With that in mind and remembering that I had a long list of minors that qualified me for many different jobs, I decided to get into health care marketing.I worked in health care marketing for 3 years where I advanced quickly through the ranks to the Corporate Director of Marketing position with a well known health care provider.
I spent 5 years in Iowa but really missed being back home near my family and the many year-around fishing opportunities Minnesota offers. For my years in Iowa I did come out with a few great things.I got married to my lovely wife Lisa who has an amazing ability to support my hunting and fishing passion.Second, my son Cole was born two months before we moved back home to Minnesota. And, last but not least, my appreciation for GIANT whitetail deer.Yes, those Iowa giants really got into my blood and when fall rolls around you can be sure you will hear about the Big Buck I am after and my real passion for wildlife food plots.
In 1999 I decided to give up my health care job which had become an excellent career and take a chance by moving back home to small town Minnesota and attempt a career in the family insurance business.I moved back home to Richmond, MN where I reside today, and Lisa gave birth to our beautiful daughter Jadyn.I spent 8 years in the insurance business with my dad, learning more important life lessons and how to run a successful small business. Some of these lessons we learned together the hard way.My dad has since retired and I purchased Steil Insurance Services from my farther in 2009.
All the time, while working along side my father in the insurance business I was able to rekindle my love and passion for fishing.I started out by fishing small local tournaments in Minnesota and continued to move up to the next level that I felt I could compete at.In 2004 that started my career on the FLW walleye tour, which was my first year fishing the Professional level and gave me a real taste of being successful. In addition to tournament fishing and selling insurance, I did some guiding on MilleLacsLake both on the ice and open water. Just like ice fishing consumes my winters tournament fishing consumes my spring and summer.
As my fishing career progressed I starting working with many media outlets across the Internet and got involved with filming TV shows on the ice with In-depth outdoors Television. After 3 seasons of filming TV on the ice and fishing a full Tournament schedule in the summer I decided it was time to get back to doing what I really love to do.Fish for fun with family and friends and hopefully pass along some knowledge that someone can use to help some else succeed in the outdoors, no matter how that is defined.
January 1, 2009 I started the Scott Steil Fishing Blog to help pass along honest information about my fishing expeditions, life on the professional tour and information on products that will help you succeed in the outdoors. I now spend equal time promoting both ice and open water products plus continue to run Steil Insurance Services, Inc. While both would be considered full time careers, I love the challege of doing both. I hope you enjoy the site come back and visit often. Feel free to email me with question or comments or add them to the Blog yourself.
